What will happen on the day of my assessment?

Our formal assessment for autism spectrum disorder are conducted online and will involve three key appointments. One to gather information about you and your child’s developmental history and background information. The other is a clinical observation of the child by two specialist clinicians. This may include an ADOS assessment which will be administered via video link and from the comfort of your own home. The final session, is a feedback appointment that usually is completed on the same day as the child observation session.

Appointment 1 – Parent/Guardian session

  • The parent/guardian session is attended by the parent/guardian of the child and is conducted by a qualified clinician.
  • This session is held prior to the formal autism assessment and is an opportunity for you to engage in a thorough discussion with a clinician about your child’s educational, developmental history and behaviour.

Appointment 2 – Observation session

  • The observation session is a structured assessment and is conducted by one clinician. A second clinician will observe the child throughout the assessment.
  • During this session, the clinician will take your child through a series of activities to accurately assess how they interact with others.
  • The observation session is simply an opportunity for the clinician to learn more about your child and can take around 1hour 30minutes to complete.

Appointment 3 - Feedback session

  • Once the child observation session is complete, the clinicians will hold an MDT meeting to discuss all of the information that has been gathered.
  • The clinicians will then decide whether you or your child has met the diagnostic criteria for a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • You will then be informed of the outcome of the assessment. You will also be given the opportunity to ask the clinicians questions about next steps and what this now means for you. You will also usually receive a draft report within 2 weeks of the assessment day.

If an individual receives an Autism diagnosis, what happens next?

Parents and individuals should expect a draft report outlining the outcome of the assessment within 2 weeks. You are encouraged to review this draft report and to inform the service of any changes that you would like made to the report. A final report will be sent to yourself and your/your child's GP to be added to their health records.

The next step would be to ensure that the needs of the individual with autism are identified, recognised and understood by settings such as their education, work or care setting so that appropriate measures can be put in place.

Following an autism diagnosis, we may offer post-diagnosis therapeutic sessions with one of our trained clinicians. This will be carried out via video link and involves the clinician meeting with the individual to support them with difficulties such as anxiety and depression.
